When the war ends the Jordon family is widely dispersed: Michael is away at school, Rachel his sister, is serving her country, his father is in Germany and his mother, Philippa, is at home in London. Two years later Samuel Jordon is asked to investigate the war-time activities of a prominent German banker. In the course of this work he meets Manfred Hirsch who is, unbeknownst to him, the father of Joe Hirsch.
