Program Description

During the French-Indian War, Cora and Alice Munro, with Major Heyward, intend to join their father at Fort William Henry, but their Indian guide may not be as trustworthy as he seems. In 1757, at Fort William Henry, the British outpost near the Canadian border, the commander Colonel Munro anticipates attack by General Montcalm's French troops and their Canadian Indian allies. Hawkeye, the American woodsman and scout for the British, reports that he and his Mohican friends, Chingachgook and his son Uncas, have detected no enemy movement in the forests. The colonel's second-in-command, Major Duncan Hetyward, suggests that Colonel Munro's two daughters, Cora and Alice, come to New York to be with their father. Meanwhile, in Scotland, the two sisters are making plants to leave for America. Young Lieutenant Grant's obvious interest in Cora dismays the chaperones at the girls' farewell party. Grant is being posted to Fort William Henry. At Fort Edward, headquarters of British General Webb, Major Heyward is making his report, minimizing Colonel Munro's fears of an imminent French attack. While he is there, the Munro sisters arrive. Under Heyward's escort and led by the Huron Indian guide Magua, the girls depart for Fort William Henry. Fort William Henry comes under attack and Munro requests reinforcements from General Webb. Skeptical, Webb sends only a token number of troops. In the forest, Heyward's party is ambushed by Hurons but Hawkeye and the Mohicans come to the rescue. Magua, the Huron guide, escapes. David, an itinerant psalmodist who the Indians respect, joins the Heyward party. As the attack on Fort William Henry continues, Hewyard's party presses on followed by a band of Huron warriors led by Magua. Source: Internet Movie Database and WGBH archived promotional material.
