Michael, now a feature writer on The Sunday Crusader, is given secret information on the Anglo-French plot to seize the Suez Canal. At the same time he learns that his first play is to be produced. Rachel Jordan is working as a research assistant for Owen Millom at Oxford and receives a proposal of marriage. As Michael becomes involved in rehearsals, the repertory theatre experience takes on more importance for him than events on the world stage.
