FRONTLINE; Tank Man, The

Series Description

FRONTLINE is investigative journalism that questions, explains and changes our world. Since 1983, FRONTLINE has served as PBS's flagship public affairs series. Hailed upon its television broadcast debut as "the last best hope for broadcast documentaries," FRONTLINE's stature is reaffirmed each week through incisive documentaries covering the scope and complexity of the human experience.

Program Description

On June 5, 1989, a solitary, unarmed protester stood his ground before a column of tanks advancing down Beijing's Avenue of Eternal Peace. Captured by Western photographers watching nearby, this extraordinary confrontation became an icon of the fight for freedom around the world. On April 11, veteran filmmaker Antony Thomas investigates the mystery of the tank man -- his identity, his fate, and his significance for the Chinese leadership.

FRONTLINE raises profound questions about the control of information and the lengths to which the Chinese government will go to suppress democratic expression. With recent news of major Internet companies Yahoo! and Google agreeing to allow the Chinese government to filter content, the program will offer a particularly timely commentary on China's efforts to control information.
