YOUR HEALTH CARE VOTE: The Health Quarterly examines the health care choices voters will make when castihg a vote for president this fall. Health policy is shaped be five competing interests: doctors, lawyers, drug companies, insurance companies and consumers. Three out of every four years, the first four influences dominate - but once every four years, consumers, that is-voters, have their say. What are the candidates offering? How will Americans vote?

DES: A DRUG THAT HARMS AND THE BURDEN OF PROOF: DES is a synthetic estrogen, invented in 1939 to prevent miscarriage. lts creator won a nobel prize. But evidence began to mount against use of the drug. Animals that were fed the drug to make them fatter caused men who ate them to develop female charteristics. Women whose mothers took the drug developed a rare cervical cancer. ln 1959 the FDA banned DES in chickens. ln 1979 the FDA banned DES in cows. lt has yet to ban DES in humans. The Health Quarterly's second segment investigates the controversy surroundeng this "miracle vitamin for pregnant women."

THE AIDS REPORT: DATING IN THE AGE OF AIDS: THE HEALTH QUARTERLY presents the most recent scientific information about the location of the virus in the body and what that means for preventing transmission.
