This news and documentary series of magazine format shows is targeted to reach the people who are facing crucial decisions about the AIDS epidemic. The program addresses public policy, scientific, legislative, service, research, and community decisions related to AIDS. Series release date: 2/1989
- Program Description
The expanding impact of the AIDS epidemic on women who have contracted the disease through heterosexual transmission and on minority communities is explored in depth in the third edition of "The AIDS Quarterly."
Women are the fastest growing group of people with AIDS; however their symptoms are often misdiagnosed and their treatment delayed because doctors seldom suspect the presence of the disease. Among minorities, new cases of AIDS are reported at a rate six times greater than that among white people. At the same time, minority access to health care is limited, at best, and federal money earmarked for AIDS programs is not reaching minority communities devastated by the disease.
The story of one woman's courage, a single court case that changes the definition of the family, and the familiar question of civil rights.
