Series Description

Buster, one of the most popular characters on ARTHUR will accompany his airline pilot father as he flies the fictional Latin rock group Los Viajeros on a concert tour of the United States, with forays into Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Buster will stay in touch with his friends back home via a small, hand-held digital video camera. These first-person video "postcards" will be in the form of live-action, P.O.V.-style footage of the places visited in the show. Narrated by Buster, they are woven seamlessly into each animated story. "It's important for children to experience cultures different from their own," says WGBH executive producer Carol Greenwald. "Putting Buster on the road and immersing him in real-life settings via the live-action 'postcards' is a perfect vehicle to teach children about the rich and complex cultural life that exists across America." Series release date: 2004

Program Description

Buster’s class at Lakewood Elementary has pen pals in Encinitas, California and Buster is going to meet them! He takes video to send back to Elwood City and learn that the Encinitas kids have pen pals in Mexico. Together they travel to Tijuana to meet their Mexican pen pals. Buster realizes that crossing the border isn’t as elaborate as he’d imagined – and that it’s possible to make a pen pal chain across the world.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Cultural Learning Objectives: Children will gain understanding into some aspects of daily life and culture in a bilingual elementary school and community in Encinitas, California, close to the Mexican border. They will also gain some insights into daily life in an elementary “sister school” in Tijuana, Mexico. Children will observe similarities and differences between their own experiences and those of the children and families in this episode. English Language Learning Objectives: For children who are in the process of learning English, this episode models ways to ask and write questions to learn more about another person and his/her life, and ways to begin to understand and speak a new language. It also builds children’s familiarity with vocabulary related to letter writing.
