Series Description

This documentary traces the history of the House of Windsor, from the troubled reign of King George V at the beginning of the century (during which the Windsor name was invented) to the present-day trials of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. These events will be examined in terms of the monarchy itself--its implied wealth and privilege, as well as its obligations to the public and its lack of privacy. This approach will allow us to see the ways in which the monarchy have reinvented themselves time and again, as quasi-religious figures or as media superstars. The series will assess how long this strategy can continue to work in the face of mounting public disillusionment. #101 - "I'm Damned if I'm an Alien"-- shows how completely King George V and his advisors transformed the royal house of Saxe-Coburg- Gotha into the House of Windsor when the family's German heritage became a serious public relations liability. #102 - "Brothers at War"-- looks behind the sensationalism and sentimentality at the story of Edward VIII and his abdication to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. #103 - "The Image of a Queen"-- follows the reign of Elizabeth II and shows how, beginning with her televised coronation in 1953, the Queen and her family made shrewd use of the media to maintain the aura of the popularity of the monarchy. #104 - "Family Affairs"-- reviews the last decade, in which the monarchy plunged from general approval into disarray, brought down by the very forces it had used to promote itself. The series concludes by asking whether and how the House of Windsor might reinvent itself for the new millennium. Series release date: 11/1994
