Series Description

The series provides a forum to examine the political, social and personal impact of changes in health care in the United States. It focuses on stories that affect us all--the cost of growing old, of nursing home care and, as we live longer, the challenge of staying healthy. Each edition of "The Health Quarterly" features "The AIDS Report," an update on the major health crisis facing the world today. Hosted by Peter Jennings.

Program Description

This hour magazine format program includes two segments: "Focus Documentary on TB" and "The Future of Reform: A Debate."

President Clinton promised health care reform within his first 100 days in office. It has now been five months and the administration has delayed unveiling its proposal until fall, but the health care crisis continues. In an in-depth discussion, series anchor Roger Mudd and a panel of experts investigate the cost of this inaction....Political leaders on both sides of the aisle as well as policy analysts weigh in with their opinions: What will the plan look like? What obstacles does it face? How much will it cost, and who will pay for it? Will there be change? Or, will this be an issue in the 1996 election?

The program's feature story is about the spread of dangerous new drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis. TB is more than a complex medical problem, it's also about other problems in people's lives. Social, cultural, economic, and political factors contribute to America's failure to control TB - a failure that underscores the deterioration of the public health system.

The Health Quarterly is produced for PBS by WGBH Boston with funding provided by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The executive producer is Renata Simone.
