Program Description

EVENING AT POPS highlights hometown musical heroes in this special broadcast, “Born in Boston.” Renowned jazz pianist Chick Corea, a native of Chelsea, Massachusetts, reminisces about his experiences growing up in the Hub, and performs his composition Spain with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra. Corea then joins vocalist Jane Monheit and jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard in a tribute to prolific Broadway composer Jimmy McHugh. Born in Boston in 1894, McHugh is famous for such well-loved tunes as “I’m in the Mood for Love” and “On the Sunny Side of the Street.” Next up, Cambridge-born composer Leroy Anderson, orchestrator and arranger for the Boston Pops Orchestra in the late 1940s, is represented by his compositions Belle of the Ball and Fiddle Faddle. And the tour of Boston’s best wraps up with a consideration of Leonard Bernstein—born in Lawrence, Massachusetts—and a performance of the Overture to his operetta, Candide.
