- Program Description
“After Germany’s catastrophic defeat in World War I a fresh start was attempted through the Republic of Weimar, the last word in democratic theory. Unfortunately, democracy was only a facade, for the old vested interests maintained their control - the Junker landowners, the predatory industrialists, the unregenerate military, and they all waited for the day when they could overthrow the Republic. Inflation wiped out the middle class and allowed speculators to get rich on the misery of the German people. There was a brief respite, the Locaro honeymoon in the Stressman period, but the World Depression plunged Germany into new misery, and the way was opened for Hitler and the Nazis.”
