Program Description

Alistair Cooke's illustrious career as well as his 22 years as host and "headwaiter" of MASTERPIECE THEATRE will be the focus of this affectionate salute. The special will be co-hosted by Peter Ustinov, Robert MacNeil, and Christopher Sarson (the original producer of MASTERPIECE THEATRE and the man who brought Alistair Cooke and MASTERPIECE THEATRE together) -- all friends and long-time associates of Mr. Cooke. The host of MASTERPIECE THEATRE since its 1971 premiere will sign off for the last time on Sunday, November 29th at the conclusion of Joseph Conrad's "The Secret Agent." Ustinov, who worked with Mr. Cooke on his first OMNIBUS series in the 1950's, will join THE SALUTE from Rome. MacNeil, executive editor and co-anchor of THE MacNEIL/LEHRER NEWSHOUR, will introduce segments from Alistair Cooke's AMERICA: A PERSONAL HISTORY series. Chris Sarson, the first producer of MASTERPIECE THEATRE, will be sharing video greetings and good wishes from around the country during this program, including Bill Moyers, Diana Rigg, Maya Angelou, William F. Buckley, Lauren Bacall, author John Mortimer ("Paradise Postponed," "Rumpole of the Bailey") and Michael Gill, producer of the AMERICA series.
