Say Brother; Inside Women Inside; Lack of services available to women prisoners
Part of Say Brother.
04/27/1979
In this clip Gertrude Cuthbert, chairperson of the Massachusetts Parole Board, describes what she perceives as sexism in the prison service in relation to the services available to women prisoners. Overall the program examines the lives of women in correctional facilities, particularly those in Massachusetts. Content is divided into two primary segments: an airing of Inside Women Inside (an acquired film exploring the lives of institutionalized women, their attitudes towards the penal system, and the conditions of the institutions they inhabit) and an interview conducted by Barbara Barrow-Murray with Gertrude Cuthbert (Chairperson of the Massachusetts Parole Board), Verna Trotman (Director of Charlotte House), Janet (no last name given, but a resident of Charlotte House), and Katherleane Graham (employee and former resident of Charlotte House). Topics include: responses to the film, the differences in resources available to male inmates as opposed to women, work release programs, the difficulty to providing care for children whose mothers are in prison, and sanitary conditions in the Framingham, Mass. correctional facility. Inside Women Inside produced by Third World Newsreel and copyrighted by Camera News, Inc. 1978. Produced by Barbara Barrow-Murray. Directed by Brian Clarke.
