The programs combine archival material with the testimony of key eyewitnesses and present new evidence regarding the controversial aspects of the war. The story of a "police action" that grew into a multinational war claiming 34,000 US casualties - in the first and only confrontation between forces of the United Nations and the Communist bloc. - Program Description
Many Roads to War Explores the domestic and international forces that contributed to the outbreak of armed conflict along the 38th parallel. Following Japan's defeat in WWII, the Korean colony was cut in half: the Soviet Union occupied the North; and the Americans the South. This decision was based on an assumption that subsequent events would mock -- that an independent and reunified Korea would follow in due course.
An Arrogant Display of Strength Covers the events in the early part of the Korean War, from the fall of Seoul at the end of June 1950, to the eve of the dramatic landings at Inchon almost three months later. Central figures in this segment include General Douglas MacArthur, President Harry Truman and Chiang Kai-shek.
There is No Substitute for Victory On Sept. 15, 1950, a detachment of Marines stormed onto the island of Wolmi-do in the Korean harbor of Inchon. Their landing marked the execution of an audacious strategic gamble by General MacArthur, undertaken despite grave misgivings among the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington. Program follows the dramatic turnaround at Inchon and ends with the disastrous impact of the Communist Chinese intervention in November 1950.
An Entirely New War In Dec. 1950, the United Nations forces were in deep trouble, retreating south from the Yalu River following China's entry into the war. This program begins with the retreat of the Eighth Army from frozen Chosin and covers the next six months of the war - including the sacking of General MacArthur. It concludes in May 1951, the end of the second Communist offensive--and the end of any real hopes of Korean reunification.
The Battle for Minds Begins in June 1951, on the anniversary of the war's outbreak, and covers the painfully slow progress of the truce talks. With neither side capable of victory, military operations became principally a means to exert pressure on the negotiations and battles were waged for hearts and minds. Examines accusations of germ warfare made by the Chinese against the US, and the propaganda contest over the repatriation of prisoners of war. Ends in November 1952, with the election of General Eisenhower as President, and a renewed determination to end the war.
Armed Truce Final program covers the last months of the fighting in Korea, examining the reasons behind the consequences of the armistice that was finally reached in July 1953. It considers the history of the Military Armistice Commission and the demilitarized zone (DMZ) and examines the contrasting characters of the two successor states that confront one another across the 38th parallel.
