In 1949, Mao Tse-Tung conquered the Chinese mainland and drove the last remnants of the Nationalists to the Formosa redoubt. But he faced enormous problems not only in coping with the opposition of the Soviets, to which he had become a future threats, but in the reorganization of the social and economic life of China and 650 million people. His reconstruction was on a scale that had never before been attempted in history, for it involved the reshaping of the minds of a whole people, through absolute thought control. His China, after two decades, was called by critics a society of Blue Ants, but it was formidable in its power and efficiency, and could now challenge the United States and Russia.
