Series Description

Series of 10 lectures presented by the Lowell Institute in cooperation with the Boston University Medical center examining issues of communication between the physician and the general public. Program description: Lecture entitled “The Doctor and His Patient: Explaining Illness”, given by Dean Frederick C. Redlich, Professor of Psychiatry, dean of the Medical School at Yale from 1967 to 1972. Introduction by Dr. Franz J. Ingelfinger, Editor, New England Journal Of Medicine. Lecture concludes with questions from the audience. 1969.

Transcribed from November 1969 WGBH Program Guide, p. 7: “’Doctors and People Talking’ aims to improve communications between those who receive medical care and the doctors who provide it. A Lowell Institute Lecture series being held at WGBH under the auspices of the Lowell Institute and the Boston University Medical Center, the ten programs will explain why doctors manage patients as they do, why the government feels obliged to participate, why clinical researchers sometimes engage in practices that do not directly benefit the individual, and why medical education is beset by conflicting treneds. ‘The Doctors and People Talking’ will open with Yale Universtiy School of Medicine Dean Frederick C. Redlich, followed Nov. 25 with an address by Senator Edward M. Kennedy”. Series release date: 11/18/1969
