Program Description

"The first episode is a special two-hour presentation. The story opens in Mayapore, India, in February 1942. It is a time of tension in India, the Japanese army is at the gates and Gandhi is rallying his followers in the struggle against British imperialism. A young Indian, Hari Kumar, is under suspicion as a subversive by the local police superintendent, Ronald Merrick. Kumar, educated in England and unable to speak his native Hindi, is everything that Merrick fears and despises – cultured, arrogant, and better educated than his adversary. The two men clash on a deeper level when Kumar forms a close friendship with a young English girl, Daphne Manners. Merrick is outraged – she has crossed the uncrossable river between the English rulers and the native ruled. Hoping to marry Daphne himself, Merrick is venomously jealous. As the friendship between Daphne and Kumar deepens into love, there is growing violence in the district. An elderly missionary, Edwina Crane, is attacked by bandits. Merrick, concerned for Daphne’s safety calls to see if she has returned home, yet. She hasn’t. Source: WGBH Press Kit, barcode 379367 "
