In the first episode of THE FIRST CHURCHILLS, entitled "The Chaste Nymph," a masque is performed at the Court of King Charles II at Whitehall, and there a young soldier, John Churchill, falls in love with a pretty lady-in-waiting, Sarah Jennings. THE FIRST CHURCHILLS is the story of the great military and political genius, John Churchill - the first ancestor of Winston Churchill to have the title of Duke of Marlborough - and his shrewd and saucy wife, Sarah, played by Susan Hampshire. The series is not only set in 17th-century England, it is 17th-century England. All the grandeur and intrigue of that period are recaptured in the luxurious costumes and sets and in the elegance of the dialogue and acting. John Churchill, played by English actor John Neville, begins the first episode as a hero on the battlefield and doesn't do badly in the bedroom either - especially with the King's mistress, Barbara, Duchess of Cleveland. There are hasty exits, bawdy humor, bloody battles, magnificant balls, acts of heroism - and the first inkling of a love affair between the brash, ambitious Churchill and the lovely and innocent lady-in-waiting, Sarah Jennings.
