Program Description

Daphne dies giving birth to a daughter. Her aunt, Lady Manners, reads her niece’s journal while at Lake Srinagar and resolves to bring up the child herself. As a senior member of the old British Raj, she cares nothing for the hostility this will provoke in the British community. Lady Manners’ neighbor at the Lake is Mildred Layton on holiday while she prepares for the marriage of her younger daughter Susan to Teddie Bingham, a young officer. Teddie has a mysterious new roommate, Captain Ronald Merrick, transferred from the police to the military. Merrick is an expert on the Indian National Army, prisoners-of-war who have gone over the Japanese. Teddie wonders if this is the reason for a number of unexplained incidents surrounding Merrick. Teddie’s posting to the front is imminent, so he and Susan will be married at once, in Mirat. It is disappointing news for Susan’s step-grandmother, Mabel, and her house guest, Barbie Batchelor, who will now not be able to attend the wedding.
