Program Description

To retrace the migration route of the great auk, Richard Wheeler, a 60-year-old teacher and naturalist, paddled a sea kayak on an epic 1,500-mile solo voyage down the northeast Atlantic coast. The auk, a large and flightless seabird, was driven to extinction in the 1840s by relentless human exploitation. On his marathon paddle, much of it recorded by a camera mounted on the kayak, Wheeler encounters fishermen, bird experts and biologists who weave a vivid and disturbing picture of threats to the northeast's wildlife and subsistence.
