Testament of Youth

Broadcast: Nov. 30-Dec. 28, 1980. Dramatization of author Vera Brittain's autobiography of her early years during World War I. In 1913, Vera -- daughter of a wealthy businessman -- is determined to go to Oxford despite her sex. There she meets the friend of her brother Edward-Roland Leighton. Roland and Edward are called up for service in France and Roland dies. Vera volunteers for service overseas where friends are dying and being maimed. She is forced to return home to help her ailing mother and Edward is killed. Embittered after the war, she returns to Oxford, determined to become a writer and work for peace and the League of Nations.
