Broadcast: April 25-May 30, 1976. Beginning in 1912, the year of a major drought, the story centers on 16-year old Christine Guthrie. Chris is a bright girl who may become a teacher some day. But she is also attracted to the harshness of the Scottish landscape and the direct coarseness of the farm people. Chris' father John Guthrie is a magnificently terrifying and pathetic creature. Consumed by the needs of the flesh, he redoubles his religious devotions and posturings. Believing himself a terrible sinner, he is convinced that everyone else is also, becoming suspicious, righteous and lustful.
