Silas Marner

George Eliot's classic Victorian novel is the story of a lonely, embittered linen weaver, living apart and speaking to no one, who is brought back into human company by the love of a small child who mysteriously appears at his doorstep on New Year's Eve. He calls her Eppie and his happiness with her is threatened when Eppie's real father comes to claim her. See Dial magazine/program guide, March 1987, for related story.
