This series rejoins the Bretts in 1931 as Charles and Lydia Brett, heads of the family, find their careers and fortunes threatened by the new phenomenon of talking pictures, which are relentlessly wooing away their audiences. Meanwhile, their elder son Edwin has given up the stage and become a famous Hollywood film star... The rest of the family also lurches its way through the upheaval of the 1930s.
