Series Description

The series provides a forum to examine the political, social and personal impact of changes in health care in the United States. It focuses on stories that affect us all--the cost of growing old, of nursing home care and, as we live longer, the challenge of staying healthy. Each edition of "The Health Quarterly" features "The AIDS Report," an update on the major health crisis facing the world today. Hosted by Peter Jennings.

Program Description

This hour magazine format program includes three segments: "The Politics 1965-1992," "Reform Within Reach," and "The AIDS Report: To Keep Kids Safe."

"The Politics of 1965-1992" examines the political, economic and societal factors that have contributed to creating the current deadlock over health care reform. Historical footage was interwoven with interviews of key figures in the reform story, with the aim of giving viewers a better understanding of why reform is so difficult.

Given the deadlock over major reform, this segment, "Reform Within Reach," asked what other kinds of reform are possible -- as part of an "incremental" approach -- in the near future. The piece focused on attempts by state and federal legislators to help small businesses insure their workers.

"The AIDS Report: To Keep Kids Safe" focused on teenagers who are especially at-risk for contracting AIDS because of unstable school and home lives. Teachers at the alternative school in Providence, Rhode Island, that was profiled in the piece attempt to head off AIDS and other tragedies by bolstering the students' self-esteem.
