Master carpenter Norm Abram (of "This Old House" renown) shows viewers how to build an elegant, affordable and durable collection of furniture at home. Program Description

Project: SailBoat

Broadcast in 2 parts: March 5 and 12, 1995.

Sailboat, Part 1 Host Norm Abram visits the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle, Washington to launch a boatbuilding project, which is modeled after a "class boat" (sailing dinghy) known as the "Clancy." In this the first part of a two part series, Norm builds the bulkhead of this lightweight sailboat using 4'x10' lengths of marine veneer mahogany plywood and an epoxy and fiberglass system to make the craft watertight.

Sailboat, Part 2 Host Norm Abram finishes his work on the Clancy sail boat. Norm completes the hull and puts together the rudder tiller assembly which uses marine aluminum plate. Norm recommends using three coats of epoxy on the hull to prevent burn through when sanding over the plugs. When preparing the boat for painting/varnishing (for UV protection), be sure to remove all sanding residue or the paint/varnish will not adhere to the boat. Norm and "This Old House" host Steve Thomas take the Clancy boats for a sail.
