Series Description

Buster, one of the most popular characters on ARTHUR will accompany his airline pilot father as he flies the fictional Latin rock group Los Viajeros on a concert tour of the United States, with forays into Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Buster will stay in touch with his friends back home via a small, hand-held digital video camera. These first-person video "postcards" will be in the form of live-action, P.O.V.-style footage of the places visited in the show. Narrated by Buster, they are woven seamlessly into each animated story. "It's important for children to experience cultures different from their own," says WGBH executive producer Carol Greenwald. "Putting Buster on the road and immersing him in real-life settings via the live-action 'postcards' is a perfect vehicle to teach children about the rich and complex cultural life that exists across America." Series release date: 2004

Program Description

In this episode Buster explores Philadelphia’s vibrant South Asian community. He meets twins Arjun and Varun, who teach him yoga, and Rajbinder, a Sikh girl who invites him to her gurdwara (temple). His new friends also take Buster to a factory that makes what he thought impossible: good airplane food!

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Cultural Learning Objectives: Children will gain some understanding into the daily culture of South Asian communities in Philadelphia as several families welcome Buster to share aspects of their life, including yoga and the importance of practice in mastering complex skills, religious observances, music, and food. Children will observe similarities and differences between their own experiences and those of the children and families in this episode. English Language Learning Objectives: For children who are in the process of learning English, this episode models ways to discuss things that are necessary, using the structures have to/has to, need/s to and ways to discuss a sequence of events using adverbs first, second, next, then. It also builds children’s familiarity with vocabulary related to practice, exercise, and staying active.
