With the help of Rose (sent on loan by Lady Marjorie), a cook, and a valet (Thomas), the newlyweds, Elizabeth and Laurence, are setting up a household of their own. A household in which the valet shows more interest in the maid than the bridegroom in the groom. So, while the bride sits upstairs, alone and unhappy, she hears from downstairs the bantering laughter of Thomas and Rose
