- Program Description
Patchwork is the act of stitching together scraps of fabric to create colorful, geometric patterns. In the United States, patchwork is closely associated with quilts and quiltmaking. Erica begins the episode by discussing “old patterns from our American ancestors” (although she herself was English), including Robbing Peter to Pay Paul, Trip Around the World, and Dresden Plate. She then launches into the project for this episode, a quilt pieced using the English template method with bright, updated colors.
At the end of the episode, Erica does an antique quilt turning, showing patchwork quilts made in patterns such as Rocky Road to Kansas, Carolina Lily, Drunkard’s Path, Hexagon Mosaic, the Pineapple variation of Log Cabin, and Crazy quilts. Finally, Erica encourages viewers to “make your own design and give it a fanciful name.”
Techniques demonstrated in this episode include English template piecing, yo-yo, and Cathedral Window.
