- Program Description
“Perhaps nothing so vindicated the American system of the open society that a man as little prepared for overwhelming responsibility as was Harry Truman could rise to his responsibility with such astonishing effectiveness. For it is generally agreed that he belongs with the great American Presidents for the major decisions that he took -- the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, Point Four, NATO, the Berlin Airlift, the Atomic Energy Act, the defense of Korea, and withal, the transition from a war to a peace economy without a depression, indeed, with an enhanced standard of living for worker and farmer. When he left office after seven years of standing up to the giants of his generation, even those who had downgraded him or who had disagreed most vehemently with him, had to admit that America and the western alliance had been well served.”
