Program Description

The 25th Anniversary Season of The Victory Garden continues in grand style as international correspondent Adrian Bloom proceeds on his six week tour of Italy. During week two, Adrian meets Enzo Margheriti, owner of Vivai Margheriti in the town of Chiusi, one of the largest nurseries in Italy. In addition to learning about the latest Italian gardening trends from the source that supplies most the country, Enzo invites Adrian to his own home garden.

Roger spreads lime and rye seeds in the empty fall beds. The rye serves to prevent erosion during the winter, discourages weeds and provides organic matter that will be turned into the soil next spring. Roger gets a head start on planting garlic bulbs (‘Siberian' garlic); he prepares the bed by adding fresh compost and tops the planted bed with a slow-release fertilizer. He tells us that the bigger the clove, the bigger the garlic head. A good mulching of hay will protect the bed during the winter months.
