- Program Description
On May 2, 1869, after six years of painstaking labor, the last railroad spike was driven in the transcontinental railroad. An army of 20,000 laborers had hand-drilled tunnels through mountains of granite and endured scorching desert temperatures, 30-foot snowdrifts, and Indian attacks. The completion of the railroad cut the cross-country trip to just nine and a half days, and united the US for the first time.
