Bronowsky relates the awful details of Merrick’s death to Peron. There is tension between Hindus and Moslems on the eve of Indian independence. A train carrying Perron, Kasim, Aunt Fenny, Sarah, Susan and Susan’s son is attacked and many are massacred. Before leaving India, Perron decides to seek out Hari Kumar. But Kumar is not at home. In the end, Kumar remains a mystery, and India remains in turmoil.
