In Ilene Segalove’s “California Casual” California wives talk about their husbands’ relationship to clothing. The women describe their husbands’ appearances, referring to unseen photographs. Conversations shift to the virtues of wash-and-wear clothing, men’s relationship to neckties and leisure suits, and the cultural environment of California.
