- Program Description
“Italy emerged from World War II with tremendous damage. Loss of life had been mercifully held down, but bombing and expropriation inflicted serious damage upon the industrial plants, communications, and shipping. The postwar inflation practically wiped out the middle class and was as serious as any of thge military assaults. It was this devastated, embittered, and discouraged Italy that became thge responsibility of Alcide de Gasperi, whose lengthy incumbency brought the country from ruin and defeatism to stability and hope. The engineering and petrochemical resources of the country were opened and Italy became a world center for fashions, the cinema, and motor cars. The boom did not last long beyond de Gasperi’s incumbency and the 1960’s brought back many of Italy’s political and economic problems.”
