The downstairs, always knowing more about what goes on upstairs than some of those involved, are not surprised when Hazel submits her resignation to Richard. "For personal reasons," she tells him, and he believes her. The servants, however, are not so easily deluded; the real reason, they feel sure, is James--up to his old ways again.
