- Program Description
On the morning of June 8, 1924, George Leigh Mallory and Andrew Irvine started up the final slopes of Mt. Everest, the first ever ascent of the world's tallest mountain seemingly within their grasp. Shortly after midday, they were spotted less than 1,000 feet from the top. Then clouds rolled in and they were never seen again. Seventy-five years after their legendary, ill-fated attempt to summit Everest, debate continues over exactly what befell them, fueled by the discovery of Mallory's body in the spring of 1999. To investigate this classic mountaineering riddle, NOVA presents a special broadcast of “EVEREST The Mystery of Mallory and Irvine,” a 1986 documentary produced by renowned climbers David Breashears and Andrew Harvard. “EVEREST The Mystery of Mallory and Irvine” includes interviews with two surviving members of the 1924 expedition -- Noel Odell and John Noel, as well as Sir Edmund Hillary, who with Tenzing Norgay made the first ascent of Everest in 1953.
