Series Description

Gardening program hosted by Jim Wilson and joined by Bob Smaus, Roger Swain, Lucinda Mays and Peter Seabrook as international travel correspondent. Series chef is Marion Morash. Special correspondent is Holly Shimizu. The Boston-based Victory Garden (w/ Roger Swain) is located at a private residence; Victory Garden South is at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia; Victory Garden West is at Roger's Garden Center in Corona del Mar, California. Original program: Crockett's Victory Garden - premiered April 6, 1976. Hosted by Jim Crockett. Second host Bob Thomson (for 12 years till 1991). Series release date: 1976

Program Description

Roger Swain rakes the fallen leaves into a large cloth gathering them and distribute in the wooded area where they will break down into valuable organic matter.

In the door yard garden, he plants conifers, in their containers, directly into the ground for the winter:

•Tsuga canadensis 'Golden Splendor' •Picea purpurea 'purple-coned spruce' •Pinus densiflora 'oculus-draconis'

He also plants picea abies 'Pendula,' juniperus davarica 'Expansa' and pinus sylvestris 'Aurea' into whiskey barrels, filled with wood chips and topped with attractive pieces of granite. He reminds us not to let them dry out during the winter months.

Adrian Bloom is in Boskoop, The Netherlands, which has been the center of the hardy stock industry for the past 500 years. He visits with Jan Grootendorst, the Managing Director of the Nursery. Highlights:

Adrian visits Zoetermeer garden center to harvest garden ideas and view their extensive collections of ornaments, gazebos, greenhouses, pergolas, water features, stone work, etc. all of which are for sale. Highlights:

•silver birch 'Betula jacquemontii' underplanted with thermopsis rhumbifolia •Iris pumila in rock garden •dwarf conifers in stone sink •tiered rock garden with mixed alpines, rock plants and mini shrubs •phyllostachys sp. bamboo •cryptomeria japonica •acer palmatum 'Dissectum' •rhododendron japonicum •strawberries in raised beds in Children's garden •cedrus libani, ssp. atlanica

Roger shows off the wonderful orange foliage of acer palmatum cv., japanese maple, which along with a collection of dwarf conifers, creates quite a show.
