Program Description

REUTHER WAS ON THE FRONT LINES OF ONE OF THE BITTEREST, BLOODIEST BATTLES EVER FOUGHT IN THE HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN LABOR MOVEMENT -- THE BATTLE TO PROTECT WORKERS FACED WITH THE GROWING PROBLEMS OF THE NEW AUTO ASSEMBLY LINES. THE PRESSURE OF THE LINE DROVE MEN OUT OF THE SHOPS IN LESS THAN A DAY. IN THE EARLY YEARS HENRY FORD HAD TO HIRE NINE WORKERS FOR EVERY ONE HE WANTED TO KEEP. TO GET MANAGEMENT TO MEET THEIR DEMANDS, THE UNION AND REUTHER DEVISED A BRILLIANTLY SIMPLE STRATEGY: THEY SAT DOWN, FIRST AT GM, THEN AT CHRYSLER, AND FINALLY AT FORD. THIS IS THE STORY OF A UNION AND ITS LEADER, WHOSE VISION OF WORKERS' RIGHTS CHANGED THE WAY AMERICA WORKED.
