Four part dramatization of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel about morality, justice, love and faith as Hester Prynne bears the scarlet letter “A” for refusing to reveal the name of her lover and father of her illegitimate child. Set in Puritan era Boston, this adaptation was filmed at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. Hailed as the first serial adaptation of a classic American novel produced with an American cast and crew by public television, it starred Meg Foster as Hester Prynne, John Heard as Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale, her lover, and Kevin Conway as Roger Chillingworth, Hester’s long absent husband who returns and is determined to learn the identity of Hester’s lover.
