Long Ago and Far Away
Emperor's New Clothes, The
Program Number

Series Description

Long Ago and Far Away captures the spirit of children's literature in a weekly series showcasing international television programs of classic and contemporary children's books, folktales, and fairy tales. The animated and dramatic productions recall the magic of storytelling. Series release date: 1988

Program Description

Told from multiple points of view, this thoroughly original version of the classic tale is about a preening emperor who ignores the plight of his poor subjects and worries only about his own appearance. A weaver, resentful of the emperor's endless demands, fashions him an "invisible" suit and cautions that "unless you admire it you must be a fool." Not wanting to seem a fool, the nude emperor parades through the streets - until a child's honesty makes him aware of his nakedness and vanity and leads him to reform his ways. Regis Philbin and Peggy Cass lend their voices.
