Program Description

In this episode of Basic Black, host Kim McLarin speaks with Paul Reville, who was tapped in March 2008 by Governor Deval Patrick to be the state's new secretary of education and to oversee the recently created Executive Office of Education. According to 2007 MCAS results, less than half of Boston's black and Latino 10th-graders were proficient in math and English, compared with more than 75% of white and Asian students. He says that Patrick asked him to think "creatively" and "boldly" about preparing all Bay State children for the 21st century. Part of his mission, Reville says, will be serving the whole child — looking at their lives inside and outside the classroom — and moving away from a "one size fits all" model of educating children.
