Program Description

Basic Black kicks off a new season as guest host Howard Manly welcomes journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault. Hunter-Gault made history by being one of the first African American students to integrate the University of Georgia in 1961, but she also is known for a career in journalism spanning more than forty years—most notably with the New Yorker, The New York Times, The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, and CNN. In her book, New News Out of Africa, Hunter-Gault turns her reporter’s eye towards Africa, examining the history, complexities and progress of an ever-changing continent.

In this episode, guest host Howard Manly talks with Hunter-Gault about her fresh perspective of modern Africa. Seeking to redefine news out of the continent, Hunter-Gault calls on everyone to take heed of some common misconceptions about Africa and support Africans in their quest to manifest their own destiny toward progress.
