Program Description

Defense conversion is a central pillar of Clinton's economic strategy. Yet, the question is, will it work? Three hundred thousand defense jobs have been lost since cutbacks began in 1989. It is estimated the total job loss will be 2.5 million by the end of the decade. This program sifts through the debris of the military-industrial complex and explores the challenges facing industries, states and people who based their livelihood on the cold war. The program chronicles the recent history of two military contractors, General Dynamics, once the country's largest defense manufacturer, and Hughes Aircraft Company, the largest supplier of military electronics, as each tries to carve out a future in a radically changing defense environment.
