Series Description

Gardening program hosted by Jim Wilson and joined by Bob Smaus, Roger Swain, Lucinda Mays and Peter Seabrook as international travel correspondent. Series chef is Marion Morash. Special correspondent is Holly Shimizu. The Boston-based Victory Garden (w/ Roger Swain) is located at a private residence; Victory Garden South is at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia; Victory Garden West is at Roger's Garden Center in Corona del Mar, California. Original program: Crockett's Victory Garden - premiered April 6, 1976. Hosted by Jim Crockett. Second host Bob Thomson (for 12 years till 1991). Series release date: 1976

Program Description

Smaus tease; West coast: Western Hills nursery, w/ Ginny Hunt • Western Hills Nursery in CA with Ginny Hunt (from VG 1627) [probably should be used earlier in the fall than this, although was definitely shot in the fall. Use in a Sept. show sometime? Nice piece. However, when I called Western Hills, 8/23/95, they objected to piece being re-run since Ginny Hunt no longer works there, and the two men who founded nursery were never mentioned in the piece despite the current manager (who was manager then) having asked us to mention them (she says)] (6:23)

Helsinki (14:09); Swain does (1:51) on frost protection using reemay, newspaper, blankets. Then picks out 'Sweetheart' beets for recipe. [possible repack problem if wanted to use late in the winter: scene opens on round red beets with full leaves on them in basket. Scene looks frosty, post-leaf drop, outside kitchen window, though.]

recipe in: "Whenever I cook beets around here I always prepare some extra so that after you've had them hot, you can have them cold." recipe out: "So remember my tip the next time you cook beets. Cook plenty and try this salad." Cold beet 'salad' with marinated red onion slices is recipe. Recipe is (2:04)
