- Series Description
Buster, one of the most popular characters on ARTHUR will accompany his airline pilot father as he flies the fictional Latin rock group Los Viajeros on a concert tour of the United States, with forays into Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Buster will stay in touch with his friends back home via a small, hand-held digital video camera. These first-person video "postcards" will be in the form of live-action, P.O.V.-style footage of the places visited in the show. Narrated by Buster, they are woven seamlessly into each animated story. "It's important for children to experience cultures different from their own," says WGBH executive producer Carol Greenwald. "Putting Buster on the road and immersing him in real-life settings via the live-action 'postcards' is a perfect vehicle to teach children about the rich and complex cultural life that exists across America." Series release date: 2004
- Program Description
Just because Buster is traveling doesn't mean that he gets out of Mr. Ratburn's assignments! He and Binky must complete a history report, but Buster is in rural Kentucky where Los Viajeros are performing, and there isn't a museum or historical statue in sight. Luckily, Carlos and Mora introduce him to fiddlers Randy and Rossi, and clogger Catherine, and Buster's report on fiddling, square dancing and traditional Old Timey music gets an "A."
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Children will gain some understanding of everyday and traditional culture in rural Kentucky. They will observe similarities and differences between their own experiences and those of the children and families in this episode. For children who are in the process of learning English, this episode models ways to discuss cultural traditions and local history and to ask questions to learn more about another person. It also builds children's familiarity with vocabulary related to history and giving directions.
