American Bouquet
Program Number

Series Description

Originally aired on May 22, 1968 as a four and a half hour marathon showcasing young filmmakers. Hosted by Standish Lawder, Yale University film professor, “Flick Out” gave viewers the chance to watch some of the most creative films being produced at that time. It included short documentaries, film essays, animated cartoons and full-length features that illuminated the art of film.

Beginning in July 1968, “Flickout” became a weekly half-hour series, produced by Henry Morgenthau, showing experimental films from both new, young filmmakers, and established craftsmen. Whenever possible Morgenthau interviews the filmmaker whose work is being shown. Series release date: 5/22/1968

Program Description

American Bouquet is comprised of five short independent films:

Old Glory by Marshall Harvey, Stephen Boyd, and Robert Rogers is a film in which the flag flies, flaps, is wrapped up, tattered, torn, on trucks, cars, nude models, beachwear, cups, and is sometimes made in Japan.

Hell On Wheels is a sort of documentary by John Quick about a mock hanging cowboy show for tourists at a Western rodeo. It sets out to show that violence is as American as the O.K. Coral.

No Dominion by Lawrence Booth is a dreamy flower in the American bouquet, a surreal history of a deserted house plagued by children and bulldozers.

National Flower Of Brooklyn by Tom McDonough is a sentimental, historical and poetic film on the Brooklyn Bridge, one of America’s greatest landmarks.

Vicious Cycles, the fifth portrait, is an animated satire on the American motorcycle cult by David Brain, Len Janson, and Chuck Menville. The film demolishes the homespun myth that you are what you drive.
