Series Description

Masterpiece contemporary, which follows the successful launches of Masterpiece classic and Masterpiece mystery!, will present outstanding British television drama with contemporary themes. Series release date: 2008

Program Description

A nation teeters on the brink of civil war in this real-life political thriller about the negotiations that led to the end of apartheid in South Africa and the release of Nelson Mandela. The secret talks show that peace is possible... even against a backdrop of terrorism and escalating unrest. Seemingly doomed to failure, the secret talks were held against a backdrop of terrorism, spying, blackmail, and escalating unrest.

Michael Young, a British businessman working in South Africa, has the audacious hope of bringing both sides of the apartheid conflict together — the entrenched government and the rebel African National Congress (ANC). But when his dream of secret talks is realized on an estate in England, it quickly becomes clear that common ground will be elusive as explosive tensions boil just below the surface.

The international cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor (American Gangster, Kinky Boots) as President Thabo Mbeki; William Hurt (Damages) as Professor Will Esterhuyse; Jonny Lee Miller (Eli Stone) as British businessman and negotiator Michael Young, Derek Jacobi (Gosford Park) as Young's boss, and Clarke Peters (The Wire) as Nelson Mandela.
