Program premiered in 1971 with The First Churchills. Hosted by Alastair Cooke. Intended as a showcase for the best of British television drama. Spawned MYSTERY! in 1980. - Program Description
Broadcast: June 11- 18, 1989 Episode One: It is 1931. Charles and Lydia Brett, having ended their long-running play, go to the South of France to visit son Edwin, who is taking a holiday from movie-making. Edwin is enjoying the company of Adela Lampert, the wife of Hollywood studio boss Ben Silverstein. While playing roulette at a casino in France Charles is suddenly taken ill and rushed to the hospital. The Bretts' youngest daughter, Perdita, is studying drama in London.
Episode Two: After his collapse at the casino Charles is told he must take it easy and rest. Edwin is suspended by the studio for his involvement with the boss's wife. Hegarty's young nephew, Fergus, arrives from Ireland needing a place to stay. Back in London, Lydia is offered only a small role in a film instead of the lead which she had hoped for. Charles concerns himself with the management of the Princess Theatre, which is in danger of being taken over by a theatre chain.
