Inspector Morse investigates of the death of eminent scientist, Dr. Julian Dear, who is attacked minutes before he is about to deliver a controversial speech on the environment. A respectable family comes under suspicion, A mysterious young man is spotted bolting from the scene of the crime. Someone has been sending Matthew Copley-Barnes anonymous packages filled with unsettling objects. Morse suspects that journalist Sylvie Maxton holds the key to a cupboard full of skeletons the Copley-Barnes family would prefer remained locked.
